northbound

we took a road trip up north last weekend to visit the dentons and had such a great time. andy and i went to college in bellingham and we just LOVE that little town. we packed the weekend eating at all our fave places and hanging out. the weather was beautiful but soooo cold that we couldn't do much outside. here's a little photo documentary of our weekend...

first things first: must head to mallards for my favorite ice cream in the world. their mint oreo is seriously life-changing.

just like his mama, he has a healthy appetite for ice cream.

we spent some time in fairhaven getting coffee and looking at books at a cute little book shop.

watching our kids play together was SO fun. this is the first time we've hung out with riley that wes could keep up with her (for the most part!)... i loved watching them play and laugh... eat meals together, etc.
Photobucket

riley was so sweet to wes... it's no wonder why wes has been yelling out "RI-YEEEE" over and over since we came home :) then he resorts to asking to see pics of riley... that is when i show him this pic, and he starts laughing and imitating riley's pose and then saying "ri-yeee" some more... adorable!
Photobucket

lots of affection... does this girl need a baby sibling or what?!? ;)

with the freezing temps, we opted for the jumpy place (can't remember the name... but you know, one of those germ-infested bouncy castle places that you vow to never enter... until you have a toddler, and then you take it back and love it!!)
Photobucket

wes loved this slide... he went down alone and with me and would then say "MO! MO!"

home for a coed bath...

Photobucket

we braved the wind on sunday morning before driving home... wes was so cozy he slept for most of our walk :)
Photobucket

on our drive home, we got to briefly see our friends, the alfords and their twin boys van and pk. it was a very quick 45-minute visit, but still so fun to see them! we snapped a quick couple pics... one of me holding the twins (remember them from this pic back when they were 4 weeks old?! my how they have grown!), and one of the 3 boys sitting up together. won't be long till VPK are running around with the wez!
Photobucket

sorry for the picture overload... there was just too much cuteness going on so i had to post lots more than usual ;) hope you are all enjoying the holidays so far!

love, eo

wesley is 18 months old and we can't believe how fast time is flying by! last thanksgiving, he was just barely sitting on his own and now we have a walking talking human running around! this month has been especially fun watching wesley completely soak up new information every day. we love you wesley jack! love, mom/dad/ruben

thanksgiving: the H1N1 edition

for most of you smarty pants, you can guess by the title of this post how we spent our thanksgiving this year ;) yes, the dreaded SWINE FLU has hit the o's house... we are fine and well and getting better. but that's the end of the story so let me tell you the beginning...

wes and i flew to nashville last week to celebrate thanksgiving 1 week early with my family. andy couldn't make it due to work, but i was lucky and thankful that we shared the flight w/ my siblings so they could help entertain wes! he did wonderfully on the flight; slept a good amount and played a lot. his favorite was to walk up and down the aisles and say a joyful "hi" to every.single.passenger while i followed closely behind smiling and mouthing "sorry"... only to be back doing it again a few short minutes later.

we had a great time in nashville and LOVED kyah and dustin's new place and their neighborhood! we spent a lot of time cooking, going on walks, seeing some of kyah's fave places to eat, etc. wesley was a great sleeper for most of the trip and i was even getting some rest (thanks to my mom to took him every morning so i could sleep in!).

wes hung out in his high chair on the kitchen island quite a bit watching all the goings on around him. here he is getting his first taste of home-made whipped cream... what a treat (and a challenge!) to get to lick it from the beater!

(p.s. kyah designed their whole remodel and she has such great taste. i didn't get many pics of the house itself b/c i didn't take my nice big camera so my point-and-shoot would not do the details justice, but you can see some of the house in the background of the pics maybe. she is a pro!)

this long hallway leads into the main kitchen/dining/great room area. wes loved to do laps here on the beautiful distressed hardwoods :)
Photobucket

i loved walking through the neighborhoods by kyah's house in east nashville. beautiful old homes that are being well taken care of. cute little shops and restaurants. we walked one day to do some antique shopping and get ice cream in a cute little district.

the last night in nashville was rough b/c wes woke up a lot and only wanted to be held... alllll night. i knew that wasn't a good sign b/c wesley never wants to be cuddled to sleep, unless he's sick. the flight home was difficult. he slept a bit but had a fever and was not happy. nine hours of travel later, we arrived home and were so glad to be back! over the course of this week, i (of course) got the same thing wes was fighting, and by wednesday we were both suffering from fever, chills, headaches, etc etc etc. we finally saw wesley's pediatrician when he kept refusing fluids, and learned that not only did he have a double ear infection, but what i was fighting was most likely the H1N1 virus. i assumed he must have it too since we had been together non-stop, and the next day the pediatrician confirmed that since the antibiotics for the ear infection didn't bring the fever down.

so.... we spent thanksgiving curled up in sweats reading, napping, medicating and getting healthy. our friends who we were planning to spend thanksgiving with brought us our thanksgiving meal, which we were so grateful for! andy and i watched a christmas movie and ate our yummy meal and went to bed early. it was actually quite a nice thanksgiving despite the several medicines/vitamins/tissues laying around the house... surely one we will never forget (nor one we want to duplicate)!!

we are all doing much better now. not 100%, but certainly on our way.

we have so much to be thankful for this year... a god who has blessed us beyond measure with dear friends and family, a roof over our heads and good food to eat, healthy bodies and a thirst for a life lived to its fullest. and that's just to name a few!

hope you all had a wonderful thanksgiving.

with love,
the o's

a visit from the slipper fam

just a week after mimi and uki left, sam (andy's sister) and her new husband tim came to visit w/ their new puppy gus. now that wesley is talking, it is so fun to teach him the names of friends and family. he picked up 'gus' the quickest, but by the end of the weekend, he was calling sam "sabba" and tim "tib". he says their names as if he is congested, which he is not. interesting.

we had lots of fun meals together with dan and katie, game night, movie night, a zoo outing, and of course playing with wes!

Photobucket

love this pic of the slipper fam cuddled up with wes while he shows them his fave show, the backyardigans :)
Photobucket

wes loved chasing gus around... he is learning that dogs truly do come in all shapes and sizes! gus is much easier to 'walk' on a leash than ruben is, so wes was excited about walking him around the house
Photobucket

wes has been wearing his red/black/white nike jersey around in support of the blazers... he's counting on them to stomp those pistons tomorrow!!!
Photobucket

...wes and i are headed out eeeeeearly thursday morning for an early thanksgiving celebration with my family at my sister's home in nashville. we are all so bummed andy has to work :( but looking forward to a wonderful thanksgiving-round-#1... great pics to come, i am sure!

10 November 2009

mimi + uki = fun!

we had a wonderful visit from andy's parents last weekend... mummi and uki ('grandma' and 'grandpa' in finish) were so excited to spend the weekend with the wez, and the feeling was mutual! wesley is saying so many new words now that he picked up the words mummi (but it turned into 'mimi') and uki quickly.

we had a very jam-packed weekend full of meals in and out, a trip to the zoo, shopping and a brunch at uncle dan and aunt katie's house. wesley takes full advantage of all the love and attention our family gives him. he was having a great time playing 'catch' with mimi and uki. this game involves him climbing up onto the ottoman and then saying "CATCH!" and stepping off. with so many catchers, he kept us all guessing which direction he would jump in until the very last second. everyone had to be on their toes, or he would have ended up on the floor.

wes is obviously in his happy place here: family surrounding him, almost naked, lovey ("yo-yo") and bear in hand and paci in.
Photobucket

there is nothing better than seeing your family love your child, and vise versa. it's so fun now that wes is at an age where he is learning names and faces of all the special people in our lives. aunt sammi and uncle tim are coming this weekend and we can't wait to see them!

also, wesley has been melting our hearts lately with real kisses. he just learned that a kiss usually goes ON someone... here he is kissing his #1 woman :)

W

wes has begun to learn the letters of his name. we just bought an etch-a-sketch where we draw a 'w' or an 'e' or an 's'.... his favorite word now is "double-ewwwwwwwe". adorable! he is just learning the shapes of letters and it's been so fun to watch the wheels turn in his head as he starts to notice letters everywhere!

speaking of new words... my favorites so far, aside from "double-ewwwwwe" are "ooh-ba" which means 'ruben', and his newest is "yo-yo" which means his 'lovey'... the little cozy blankey he sleeps with. the funny thing is, whenever he finds his 'yo-yo', he gives it a big hug and then politely requests a paci by saying "pasth". his request is usually denied unless it's naptime, but he is a persistent little fellow and asks every time he cuddles his yo-yo.

we have had a fun and busy week. wes got his first haircut! i thought this would be a more fun occasion than it turned out to be. wes seemed to be under the impression that he was going in for some sort of surgery, b/c he cried almost the whole time. i ended up saying yes (after initially rejecting) to the movie AND the lollipop (his first candy experience).. both helped but didn't keep him from crying for long. his haircut is adorable though... trimmed up but still shaggy :)

stopping to notice that candy rules and mentally noting to have more in the future
Photobucket

home for cuddles with aunt izzy afterwards... she was such a comfort to him in his time of "need" ;)
Photobucket

we also took a day trip out to cannon beach this week with some friends from our mom's group. it was 65 and sunny, and surely that will be the best weather we see there for awhile! we had a great day eating out, playing on the beach and walking thru shops. my friends took pics but i don't have them yet... here's a pic from my phone of wes and i. he obviously wasn't happy about me holding him and keeping him from eating sand for 20 seconds.
Photobucket

lastly, we made a great little snack yesterday that i thought i'd share. as we are full-swing into the season of all things pumpkin, this recipe caught my eye for pumpkin shakes. healthy, filling and wesley-approved. of course, he helped make them which was 1/2 the fun.

pumpkin shakes (serves 2)

1/2 cup pumpkin puree
1 cup rice, almond or cow’s milk
pinch cinnamon
pinch nutmeg
1 tbsp agave nectar

1. place all the ingredients in a blender
2. puree until smooth
3. serve

"mmmmmmmmmmmm" is what he said when he took his first sip of his shake :)

halloween and 17 months old!

wes turned 17 months old yesterday, which happened to be halloween. it was a fun day and we lucked out with no rain! to celebrate the bithday, we made pumpkin cinnamon pancakes in the morning, then went to the zoo as a family. andy usually spends saturday mornings alone with wes but this time, they invited me to come along :)

after naps, we met some of our siblings in multnomah village for some halloween fun. wes was, of course, the most charming little elephant i've ever seen :)

Photobucket

after stopping by a few houses, we landed at our friends' matt and jj's house. we used to live across the street from matt and jj, and would trick-or-treat with violet every year. so, as tradition must have it, we were happy to spend another halloween together. we had a yummy dinner with them while violet gleefully ran around with wesley. wesley absolutely adores violet, and violet says that the feeling is mutual. i'd really like to borrow her a few afternoons a week when wesley needs a playmate :) she is the closest thing he has to a sibling or cousin at this point and we love to see them play together.

Photobucket

off to trick-or-treat! wes was sooo happy to have his own pumpkin bucket that violet lent him. he didn't get any candy this year, but he doesn't (yet) know what he's missing out on :)

we cannot believe wes is almost a full year and a half. wow! seeing him walking around last night with his costume on while holding his candy bucket made him just look so big and old. what a big difference from last year...

(wes at 5 months)

with 11 (almost 12) teeth, several new words and a BIG personality, wes is a joy to spend every day with. we love you wezzzzz! love, mom/dad/ruben
